Arrow keys to move, so it needs a keyboard. Grab portals to level up and shields to survive a hit. Sound plays once you start.

What I built

  • Built the menu flow (landing, settings overlay, tutorial, gameplay) and a settings panel with a volume slider and three difficulty presets that set asteroid speed, spawn rate, and starting danger.
  • Ran the game loop with setInterval timers for player movement, asteroid spawning, and scoring, and handled arrow keys through keydown and keyup flags for smooth diagonal motion.
  • Added timed portal and shield pickups. Portals advance the level, add 2 danger, and raise asteroid speed up to a cap. Shields absorb one hit and swap the player sprite.
  • Detected collisions with axis-aligned bounding boxes, and added pause and resume, sound effects scaled by the volume setting, and a game-over screen with the final score.
